Gerald Monk

Dr. Gerald Monk is a Professor in the College of Education's Department of Counseling and School Psychology. He has an international reputation for the development of an innovative approach to conflict resolution known as narrative mediation. His co-authored text with Dr. John Winslade, Narrative Mediation: A New Approach to Conflict Resolution (2000) outlines the application of narrative mediation approaches to conflict situations. Gerald has taught numerous workshops on this subject in the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Austria, Iceland, Cyprus, Mexico, and the United States. Most recently, he was a recipient of the Fred J. Hansen Grant for Peace Studies where he conducted bi-communal workshops in the buffer zone in Nicosia and trained former Turkish and Greek Cypriot enemies in conflict resolution processes. Gerald is involved in a range of professional domains utilizing conflict resolution and mediation approaches. Specifically, he is a consultant to managed care health systems such as Kaiser Permanente; a collaborative divorce specialist with Collaborative Family Law Group in San Diego; and a senior trainer with the Training Institute of the National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC). Gerald teaches a range of conflict resolution and counseling courses at SDSU. He conducts overseas study abroad programs for ISCOR with the most recent program in New Zealand. Monk's original home is New Zealand where he graduated from the University of Waikato, Hamilton in 1998. He settled in the United States in 2000. In addition to his academic work, Gerald has worked as a mediator in a successful practice over the last 20 years.
