Description of Practice
My mediation practice reflects my diverse background. I come from a multilingual European country, and have an affinity for international, cross-cultural, procedurally loaded and complex matters.
Professional Background
I am an international attorney and dispute resolution consultant. I received my education in Switzerland, at Georgetown, and Stanford University (dissertation on justice). I am admitted to practice law in CA, NY, before the U.S. Supreme Court, and in Switzerland. I have worked as an ADR instructor and consultant for over 20 years. I have taught negotiation, law, business, and economics.
Experience
Broad and covers over 20 years. Worked in court-annexed consulting and mediation for the labor law court in Zurich. Handled many mediation cases in the international arena, and worked as a consultant and instructor for many companies. Founded several enterprises. A typical international case involves companies from two or more countries with commercial, jurisdictional, and other issues.
Degrees
- lic.iur., University of Zurich, Switzerland
- LLM, Georgetown U. Law Center, Washington, DC
- JSM, Stanford Law School, Palo Alto, CA
- JSD, Stanford Law School, Palo Alto, CA
Training
Dates | Trainer(s) | Title |
1988-2005 | Rupert Lay | var. |
1991 | Roger Fisher | Getting to Yes |
1993-1994 | Frank Sander, Linda Singer, Michael Lewis | Mediation |
2003-2004 | Gary Friedman | Mediation, etc. |
Approach
My approach is a mixture of pragmatic and dynamic leading. In general, I intervene actively in the process. For some cases, when a more neutralized role of the mediator is indicated, I emphasize facilitation. I'm neither afraid of nor adverse to having lawyers present in the sessions. I prefer joint sessions over "shuttle diplomacy".
Fees
My fee schedule is based on social responsibility and an efficient motivational system. It ranges from no fees (PRO BONO) up to $600/hour. Factors determining my fee include the financial situation of the parties, the complexity of the case, and my present case load. The parties will receive a fee range in advance, and a final determination after disposition of their case.
Other Information
I have published articles in the following fields: rhetoric, cross-cultural negotiations, economics, psychotherapy, and jurisprudence. I speak English, German, French, Italian. I'm the founder of a non-profit institute for leadership and ethics.
My hobbies are: hiking, dancing, sailing, tennis, swimming, biking, chess, golf, traveling, playing the violoncello, and listening to music.
