Description of Practice

Kimberly Canova has been practicing law and mediating parties in dispute since 1992. Her focus areas are domestic relations issues, including Divorce, Custody, Alimony, Paternity, Modification of Custody, Guardianship and Grandparent Visitation. She has been a certified mediator through the Arkansas Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission since 2005.

Professional Background

Kimberly obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hendrix College in 1989. She then attended the University of Arkansas School of Law (Fayetteville) and obtained her Juris Doctorate in 1992. She is a solo law practitioner since 1992 and has been a certified mediator in Northwest Arkansas since 2005. She has been married since 1995 and has three children.

I have litigated divorces, contested custody actions, big asset divorces, guardianships and grandparent visitation since 1992. I do not handle car wrecks or criminal cases. My practice is limited to family law issues. In 2005 I became a certified mediator through the Arkansas Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission. It is my firm belief that mediation is the best way to resolve family issues.

Bachelor of Arts from Hendrix College in 1989 Juris Doctorate from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, 1992 Certified Mediator through the Arkansas Administrative Office of the Courts 2005. "Degree" in wrangling 3 children began in 1998. "Degree" in learning how to negotiate a marriage began in 1995.

I am a Facilitative Mediator. I view mediation as a "brain storming" process and work with parties to develop different scenarios of solutions to their particular case. I am definitely not a "message carrier" mediator who runs back and forth between rooms conveying offers. I actively engage with the parties and their attorneys, if present, and am not afraid to challenge parties with unrealistic expectations. I make sure my clients make educated decisions. I am mindful that the parties are driving the car and I'm onboard just for helpful directions and the ultimate decision is theirs.

I charge $100 per hour per party. There is a minimum charge of 1 hour and I am happy to do prep work with information you might want me to review and analyze prior to the mediation.

Other Information

I prefer multiple meeting mediations, particularly in complicated cases because I think the best decisions are ones you get to sleep on. These sessions are typically 1-2 hours in length over a weekly basis. However, I often handle the 1 day "get it typed and signed now" cases if that is what the parties and/or their lawyers prefer. I do offer a pre-mediation "workshop" to help parties identify what information would be helpful to gather and bring to the table at the scheduled mediation. As any good mediator knows, the exchange of information is a key component to assisting clients with making the very best decisions and I do not like to interrupt the flow of a mediation to chase down tax returns.
