Description of Practice
Having worked eighteen years at sea in the merchant navy and a further 26 years within the marine insurance community, John established Bernicia Marine Consultants Limited to provide expertise and mediation services in this sector. He has extensive dispute resolution experience in all manner of marine insurance claims and has used his mediation and ADR training to avoid contentious litigation in all but a few circumstances in more than 25 years. Expertise Day to day operational and technical management and adjustment of admiralty, cargo, hull & machinery, salvage and pollution related claims - liaising with ship owners / brokers / charterers / claimants / legal and technical advisors.

CEDR accredited 2003 o 26 years’ day-to-day administration and technical management of P&I and marine hull claims Mediation - several matters including, but not limited to: Multiparty shipping related operational and technical disputes worldwide. Timber supply contract. Super yacht construction incl technical and costs penalty evaluation. Bulk Chemical, Road Haulage partnership agreement. Fuel oil contamination / delivery / delay claims worldwide. Solicitor’s negligence / Ship supply dispute / unpaid duties. Marine / property / technical assessment of repair costs / project management. Multi jurisdiction / limitation value marine claims. Indigenous people / cultural evaluation (New Zealand). Rail infrastructure / acquisition and merger dispute.
A clear preference towards parties consensual and facilitative approach to the process. While lawyers will often be in the room; and when the time is right – I would like to hear what the principles have to say about a remedy that works for them.
GB£180.- per hour / or GB£1,200.- based on a 8 hour day (plus overtime at £180/hr same day). Travel and disbursements at cost plus 10% unless paid within 30 days. All rates negotiable especially if on-line mediation via video-conference for ‘early intervention’ review.
