Description of Practice

As a mediator, Greg brings to the table not only his extensive trial experience, his legal acumen, and his ability to analyze risk, but just as importantly, his common sense, his passion for resolving conflict, and his ability and willingness to empathize and listen. He is persistent and determined and in the unlikely event that a matter is not resolved during a mediation session, Greg will continue to work with the parties to bring about a satisfactory resolution.

Professional Background

Greg most recently served for over a decade as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of National Life Group, one of America’s oldest life insurance companies. At National Life, he led the legal and compliance teams during a period of extraordinary growth for the company. Prior to National Life, Greg led the litigation department at MassMutual. He earlier was Counsel and Assistant Vice President for UNUM Corporation. At the outset of his career he was an associate, then partner, at Pierce Atwood in Portland, Maine where he was a trial lawyer. He is a member of ARIAS US and serves as an arbitrator in reinsurance disputes. He has participated in scores of mediations over his 37 year legal career.

Greg's approach to mediation is based on 6 principles and concepts: Listening is often more helpful than talking. Establishing trust is a critical component in almost every conflict resolution. Clear and transparent communications greatly enhance the opportunity for resolution. Understanding the law is important, but generally not as important as understanding people. The financial, emotional, and productivity costs of trial rarely justify the stress of an uncertain outcome. Perseverance. In the unlikely event that a dispute is not resolved during a mediation session, Greg will continue to work hard to bring about a mutually agreeable resolution.
