Description of Practice

Courtenay Parrott Sobral is currently the part-time Mediation Coordinator for the 10th Judicial District in Pueblo, Colorado. She is also a contract mediator for the Neighborhood Justice Center, a Division of the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office in Colorado, mediating criminal and civil protective orders, school, property and neighbor disputes, referred by the El Paso and Teller County District Courts. Ms. Sobral has extensive experience handling small business, neighbor, school and student disputes. She is a Certified Family Mediator and Parenting Coordinator, specializing in working with families and couples in divorce mediation, parenting plans, custody arrangements and marriage mediation, in which couples mediate to stay married.

Ms. Sobral also works with families who are not involved in the judicial system at all but who just need the help of a mediator to resolve a dispute among themselves.

Professional Background

Ms. Sobral was a practicing attorney for over 15 years in a variety of areas, including employment, human resources, business, insurance, and education law. In doing so, she developed a passion for working with families as a pro bono attorney for abused, deprived and neglected children, which has carried over into her family mediation practice.

Ms. Sobral became a mediator in Colorado in 2017 because her heart lies in resolving disputes peacefully. Ms. Sobral has participated in the mediation and settlement of hundreds of cases because when people sit down face-to-face and are committed to resolving a situation peacefully and as inexpensively as possible by avoiding litigation, in almost every case they are able to do so because mediation works.

Experience

Ms. Sobral has over 17 years experience analyzing, negotiating, settling and drafting agreements in a wide variety of business, employment and family law matters.

Degrees

In 1996, Ms. Sobral received a Juris Doctorate With Honors from the University of Oklahoma College of Law. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Minor in French also from the University of Oklahoma.

She is a Certified Family Mediator and Parenting Coordinator in Colorado.
