Communication, or lack thereof, is often the culprit in disputes. When emotions are running high it can be difficult to clearly state your thoughts on a subject as well as difficult to really hear what the other party is saying. As a Registered Civil Mediator, my job is to listen to each party and effectively relay the wishes of each party to the other. Having a neutral involved can relieve the emotional stress a party feels when speaking directly to the person or persons with whom they are in a dispute. Sometimes the dispute is not really a dispute at all, but instead a need to be heard. Once each party really hears the other, there is a greater chance of reaching an agreement. It is not a the job of a mediator to suggest settlement compromises or to pressure either party into going along with the other. It is not the job of a mediator to provide legal advice, financial advice, or counsel the parties in any capacity . It is the job of the mediator to listen and to relay.
