Description of Practice

A boutique mediation firm providing services to families (divorce, custody, elder mediation, etc.) as well as to businesses, educational institutions, and nonprofits.

If you are looking for affordable, quality mediation services, whether you are getting divorced, can't seem to agree with your siblings about your parents' care, or are trying to resolve a workplace dispute, you've come to the right place. I am a professional who is dedicated to mediation rather than the practice of law. I want to work with you because I truly believe in the benefits of mediation; it's not something I use to complement a law practice.

Professional Background

I am a full-time professional mediator. Mediation was always my primary professional interest when deciding to get a law degree; it is not a second career for me. Before beginning law school, I interned at the Better Business Bureau as a mediator. Throughout law school, I took courses in mediation and negotiation, and utilized these skills while working at various organizations such as the FDNY Bureau of Investigations and Trials and Brooklyn Law School's Community Real Estate Clinic.

Since then, with over 5 years' experience, I have gained an invaluable background mediating many matters ranging from divorce and custody disputes to labor and employment disagreements.

I also have 8 years' experience working in the investment finance industry, and clerked for a Tax Court judge in New Jersey.

I focus my practice on the art of helping clients resolve conflict outside of the courtroom, and I am a strong proponent of empowering people to handle non-adversarial matters themselves as pro se (self-represented) litigants in court.

Degrees

BA: (Liberal Arts/ Psychology), Thomas Edison State College of NJ

JD: Brooklyn Law School

LLM: (Tax/ Trusts and Estates), Boston University School of Law

Mediation Certificate: Northwestern University

Approach

My goal is to help clients communicate effectively and openly, so they can resolve disputes together, in a way that is as least adversarial as possible. I create a comfortable environment where we listen to each other's concerns, hopes, and ideas. We work together to clarify exactly what issues need to be addressed, to brainstorm creative solutions to these issues, and to make decisions that are acceptable to all parties involved.

There are 3 main styles of mediation: Facilitative, Evaluative, and Transformative:
Facilitative- Mediator asks questions, validates the parties' points of view, searches for interests supporting the positions taken by parties, and assists the parties to find and analyze their options.
Evaluative- Mediator points out the weaknesses of their cases, and attempts to predict what the outcome of the case would be in court. They are concerned with the legal rights of the parties rather than their needs and interests, and evaluate each case based on legal concepts of fairness.
Transformative- Mediator helps clients engage in a process of communication, collaboration, and compromise. The mediator aims to empower the parties to voice and address their needs, interests, values and views. During the mediation, some or all parties or their relationships may be transformed, or changed.

I practice transformative mediation, with roots in facilitative mediation. That said, I do still provide you with statutes and legal information so you are aware of where you stand from an evaluative perspective.
