Description of Practice
I offer divorce mediation services for all or part of a straight, gay, or trans couple's divorce, and I also work with couples who have never married but are now faced with the challenge of working out a parenting plan and/or dividing their assets and debts. I am passionate about providing clients with a safe environment and a way to uncouple with minimal pain. My belief is that couples who were perfectly capable of falling in love, deciding to marry, handling their finances, making decisions about their lives, and perhaps deciding to have and raise children, can end the relationship between them by themselves as well.
Member of Las Vegas Mediation (www.lasvegasmediation.org) and Nevada Mediation Group (www.nevadamediationgroup.com). Retired professor-in-residence, William S. Boyd School of Law, University of Nevada Las Vegas; founder and former director of the Strasser Mediation Clinic; former Director of Communications and Dispute Resolution for New York City's Civilian Complaint Review Board
I have been mediating since I was in law school in 1994. At the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) I implemented and directed the largest civilian/police mediation program in the country at that time. I also taught mediation at New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies, and developed a practicum at Manhattan's Small Claims Court for students who took my mediation theory course. At the Boyd School of Law I taught mediation theory for four years and then founded and directed a clinic set in Clark County's Family Court, where law students, trained in mediation theory, actually mediated divorce cases with my supervision. After retiring from academia, I have continued to offer divorce mediation services.
J.D. cum laude, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, NY, NY M.A., Education, Adelphi University, Garden City, NY; B.S., Chemistry, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY
I am a facilitative mediator. That means I am not going to make decisions for you or evaluate proposals you might be unsure of. I am more than willing to give as much legal information as you may need and share my own experiences dealing with Clark County Family Court judges, but in the end only you can make decision. I hope to offer a safe environment for working out the issues, encouragement of creative resolution of the issues, and a fee structure that doesn't cost more than the wedding.
My fee is $250/hour. Fees are payable by credit card at each session, check, or cash. Compare this will an average retainer fee of $3500 by a lawyer and you will see that, if you prepare well, work hard, and are willing to negotiate, the process will be far less expensive than going to court.
I offer a half hour free consultation to discuss what mediation is, how it works, and how it can benefit you. Although we won't be discussing the details of your particular case during the consultation, you'll get a better sense of the process and of me, too!
