Description of Practice

This Mediator is Certified
I am a family law attorney and mediator with over 20 years of family law experience. I have considerable experience in helping families in interest based negotiations. I help spouses to effectively communicate with each other using conflict resolution methods individually tailored to the people and issues involved. For families seeking an evaluative mediation, based on the most likely outcome if the matter was decided by a judge, I have many years of courtroom experience involving child custody, visitation and community property issues. I am on the faculty at the Southern California Institute of Law as a Professor teaching California Community Property Law.

Professional Background

I have been practicing family law as a lawyer and mediator in California since 1973. Although part of my family law practice has always involved going to court, in addition to out of court mediation, I have always approached family law negotiations cooperatively which has resulted in an extremely high percentage of cases reaching settlement without trial. My practice is currently limited to family law in the areas of mediation, collaborative family practice and litigation. I am past president the Coalition for Collaborative Divorce.

I use a variety of mediation methods depending upon the circumstances of each case, including: Facilitative, transformative, narrative and evaluative methodologies. My primary goal is to help the parties effectively communicate with each other, and to understand and empathize with each other in arriving at agreements. If at all possible I try to help the parties engage in recognizing and resolving underlying conflicts. As an experienced family law attorney I am able to provide evaluative information about likely possible outcomes in a court setting. Some parties are only interested in reaching an agreement that corresponds to what would happen in court if the case went to trial. Where at all possible I try to help the parties identify their individual needs and reach agreements taking those needs into account even where a court would never issue such an order without the agreement of the parties.

$350 per hour for attorney/mediator services; $175 per hour for mediation assistant services. The mediation assistant generally prepares all the forms necessary for filing the initial petition and for obtaining the final judgment. I prepare the Marital Settlement Agreements.
