Description of Practice

Charlie Rowan has been helping people resolve differences peacefully for over 30 years. He is certified by the Supreme Court of Virginia* to mediate the most complex family issues, including divorce, separation, property division, spousal support (alimony), child support, custody and parenting. Charlie welcomes cases involving family-owned businesses.

In his own divorce, Charlie learned that a process focused only on achieving “settlement” left much to be desired in family conflict. Settlement-driven mediation might get the parties to an agreement, but it may leave them still upset and ill prepared to move forward. Charlie believes it is important for families to have the option of a mediation process rooted in dialog and understanding. Agreements reached in this kind of process tend to be satisfying and healthier for all family members.

Charlie is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law and Johns Hopkins University. He served as law clerk to a federal judge and tried cases at two major law firms before serving as dispute-resolution counsel at a major corporation. He is Co-Chair and past Chair of the ADR Section of the Fairfax Bar Association. He is a licensed attorney in DC and Virginia, and is a member of the Collaborative Professionals of Northern Virginia.

* In Virginia, mediators who successfully complete the required rigorous training and practicum may be certified by the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia. Certified Virginia mediators are required to meet strict standards of professional responsibility.
