Description of Practice

Following admission to the bar in 1979 Doug has practised as a barrister, except for three years from 1984 to 1986 when he was a partner of a firm of solicitors. In May 1991, he was awarded a Master of Laws degree as an inaugural student of Bond University with majors in corporate and comparative law. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2006 but that rank was usurped by appointment by Letters Patent as Queens Counsel, on 6 June 2013 with his seniority preserved from the date of appointment as Senior Counsel.

Doug began mediating, as an adjunct to his practice as a barrister, in 1996. He is an approved Mediator and Appraiser for the Queensland Supreme and District Courts and he is also accredited under the National Mediator Accreditation System that commenced on a National basis in January 2008.

Having first trained at Bond University’s ADR Centre, (he is now a member of its advisory board)Doug has also studied, on two separate occasions at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University, California, as well as at the American Institute of Mediation in Los Angeles.
