As a neutral whose work has evolved over the past 20 years into an exclusively mediation-related practice, Jerome F. Weiss has drawn on his academic and practical experience and his years of work as a litigator, to accomplish a high success rate in the meaningful disposition of cases through alternative dispute resolution. Jerry benefited from his early experience in federal grant work, managing projects that addressed the backlog of cases through the use of early intervention/mediation in several major metropolitan areas in the United States. This experience in related issues and systems was invaluable in sharpening his mediation understanding and skills. As a private mediator and a mediator sitting on both Federal and State Panels, he has mediated a broad variety of cases. (See, TYPES OF MEDIATION PRACTICE.) As a litigator representing an extensive assortment of cases and clients in many forums, Jerry has further developed his understanding of the problems facing litigants and their counsel in the resolution of disputes. Jerry’s consultation and participation as a neutral has been sought by individuals and institutions both regionally and nationally.

Jerome Weiss is a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators (IAM), an organization that recognizes premier practitioners of commercial mediation.  He is the only Northeast Ohio mediator represented on the IAM roster of approximately 120 individuals.   Membership is recognition by a candidate’s peers that he or she has attained status as a preeminent commercial mediator and professional in the field of alternative dispute resolution. The mission of the IAM, based in Toronto, Canada, is to define standards and qualifications for the professional mediator of commercial disputes and to promote the mediation process as the preferred means of resolving disputes.  It fosters the highest standards of integrity and competence in mediation.  At the core of its mission, the IAM promotes the study and understanding of the mediation process, and educating the public, courts and legislative bodies on effective and appropriate uses of mediation.  An Academy goal is the general acceptance of the concept of mediation as a separate discipline and profession, distinct from other fields. This aspect of the mission achieves a recognition of high qualifications and standards for IAM Membership. Ongoing dialogue and seminars with colleagues from diverse regions and backgrounds, along with collaboration on such projects  as the Harvard Negotiation Insight Initiative are only a few of the reasons why IAM stands out and why it represents the cutting edge of mediation theory and practice.  For more information about IAM, go to www.iamed.org.
