Why we're there
I liked your viewpoint. One of the best tips I've heard was from a judge last year. She said that she doesn't care if we get an agreement, only that the parties have a positive day in court and feel good about the process. You're right, some of the best mediations are those which don't end in a written agreement, for one reason or another, but that end with both parties feeling they were heard and perhaps, maybe, the next time they have a conflict they will resolve it before turning to a lawsuit or claim.
