Parent-Teen Mediation Program

Resolving family conflict through good communication

During the challenging period of balancing independence and working toward adulthood, parents and teens can experience conflict around recurring issues.

Help for families negotiating difficult moments with teens can be hard to find and often not tailored to specific circumstances.

CMS offers alternative dispute resolution. We are dedicated to helping families resolve conflict in a safe, neutral environment.

Typical Issues:

    • Communication
    • Trust
    • House rules/responsibilities
    • Siblings, rooms and fairness
    • Curfew and car use
    • School attendance and grades
    • Foster/step-parent relationships
    • Dating or sexual activity
    • Friendships
    • Smoking/drinking/drugs

What is mediation?

Mediation is an opportunity for parents and teens to:

  • talk about the things that are bothering them, set goals and then work out agreements that will help them get along better
  • work with trained, neutral mediators who create a safe place where everyone is given a chance to talk and listen
  • openly discuss their points of view and develop a resolution that is acceptable to all

Mediation is NOT counseling; it is an opportunity to communicate.

Mediation is a voluntary process and any participant may choose to end the mediation at any time if it is not working for them. We believe that real change depends on everyone wanting change and on communicating openly and honestly in good faith.

“This was better than the counseling sessions we had.”

What to expect...

When you call CMS, we will listen to your specific concerns and help you decide if mediation is a good fit. With your permission, we contact the other person(s) and explain the process to them. If both parties agree to meet, we will schedule a session at a mutually convenient time and place.

We can usually schedule a two-hour session within a week or two of your request.

Our services are confidential, short-term and low cost.

Mediation sessions are facilitated by two professionally trained mediators who will explain the process, help you develop ground rules, answer your questions, and ask each of you in turn to describe the areas of conflict.

The mediators will offer methods to help you identify common concerns, define and clarify issues, and acknowledge the feelings of all participants.

They will not tell you what to do, but will help both parents and teens to determine their own solutions. When you reach agreements, the mediators will help you put those agreements in writing, if wanted.

Mediation sessions are held at the CMS office or other locations and can be scheduled for day or evening hours for your convenience.

The mediation sessions are scheduled for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Typically, families participate in one to three sessions, depending on the time needed to resolve their specific issues.

“We both realized that what we needed from the other was a little respect, and the whole thing turned around.”

To get started there is a $50 non-refundable intake fee that is included in the total cost of $200 for a two session package. Each additional session is $75. For those who qualify, a sliding scale is available.

Any family member or family advocate can inquire about parent-teen mediation by calling us at 344-5366 or by emailing: .

We will respond quickly and with confidentiality to reach all participants and learn more about the situation before scheduling a mediation.

“Mediation is the first time we’ve been able to really talk to each other  in a long time.”
