Worsening Economy Brings Increased Discrimination Charges: How Early Mediation Can Assist
The years 2008 and 2009 brought grim economic times resulting in increased charges of discrimination and harassment by beleaguered employees. In former days, employees who felt harassed or unfairly terminated sometimes moved on to other companies rather than filing a formal complaint. Because fewer job opportunities are now available, disgruntled or laid-off employees appear more likely to file complaints of discrimination. The following figures illustrate this trend.

Employment Mediation At The EEOC And DFEH: The Models and the Opportunities
The numbers of discrimination claims against employers filed with federal and state agencies continues to grow. In 2002, discrimination complaints filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) hit a seven-year high at 84,442. In 2001 in California alone, 18,221 complaints were filed with the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH). Typical complaints included sex harassment, race harassment, discrimination based on various protected categories and retaliation.
