The U Center of North Carolina is one of many state centers that will be promoting Conflict Resolution Day. They are conducting this activity in cooperation with the surrounding Mayors who have joined forces from the 82nd Annual U.S. Conference of Mayors where they have launched a campaign to end Bullying.

Dedicated practitioners are helping to educate the public about mediation and other conflict management processes. Topics such as bullying, divorce, domestic violence, mediation, arbitration, and more will be covered in Conflict Resolution Day activities. ACR's original intention was for Conflict Resolution Day to be promoted by community centers around the country. The belief is that if the public has a better understanding and awareness of mediation, they will be more likely to hire a mediator. And the more mediators that are hired, the better for all of us! Contact your local ACR Chapter, or visit the www.acrnet.org website for ideas about how to connect and promote Conflict Resolution Day in your area.

Each Year ACR celebrates Conflict Resolution Day the third Thursday of October.

Their logo of the tree was designed as a symbol to celebrate growth in Conflict Resolution. The first year, start small, but just like the tree the seeds you plant one year, will continue to grow and blossom each year.

Conflict Resolution Day was conceived in 2005 by ACR to:
> Promote awareness of mediation, arbitration, conciliation and other creative, peaceful means of resolving conflict;
> Promote the use of conflict resolution in schools, families, businesses, communities, governments and the legal system;
> Recognize the significant contributions of (peaceful) conflict resolvers; and
> Obtain national synergy by having celebrations happen across the country and around the world on the same day.

They offer the ability to download a Conflict Resolution Day poster which is available in seven languages (Arabic, English, French, Mandarin, Hebrew, Japanese, and Spanish). They also include tips on setting up a program, a sample letter that can be used to request a proclamation, and many proclamations from various jurisdictions.

October has become a time to promote and celebrate peaceful conflict resolution practices worldwide. Dedicated dispute resolution practitioners are helping to educate the public about mediation and other innovative conflict management processes. The ABA declared the third week of October, “ABA Mediation Week,” in part building on the efforts of many other national, state, and local organizations, including the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) which have been celebrating conflict resolution during the month of October. The ABA and ACR, as well as numerous other organizations, are working to raise awareness of the importance of mediation and conflict resolution.

Biography


Donald Lloyd is a certified Mediator and Arbitrator with over twenty-five years of experience in ADR, trained by some of the leading institutes including AAA, FMCS, ABA, NEA, BBB, ACR, Cornell, Fordham and John Jay Universities and other creditable organizations. He has mediated and arbitrated at the Local, County, State and Federal government levels in the following industries Education, Labor, Commercial, Construction, Employment, Air Traffic Control and in both the public and private sectors. Don is a member of the following neutral panels; National Mediation Board, NYS Employment Relations Board, Council of the BBB in NY and NC, NY Human Rights Commission, Federal Aviation Administration and others. He is also a Board of Director member to the Piedmont Mediation Center, INC. in Stateville, NC.
