Curriculum Vitae

     Mr. Smith has participated in over 200 mediations in the past 10 years including other ADR including other proeedings, evaluations and arbitrations. He has served as a mediator in over 130 matters, many of which were referred out of the Contra Costa County ADR program, and in many where he was retained as a private mediator.

     Mr. Smith has completed over 100 hours of training and seminars in mediation, and has acquired a Certificate of Training in mediation from Professional Mediation Associates in San Rafael, California. Mr. Smith has over 35 years of experience in civil litigation involving business, employment, contract, real estate and construction, personal injury, probate and estates.      Mr. Smith has memberships in the Northern California Mediation Association and the California and American Bar Association affiliations. He subscribes to the draft Standards of Conduct For Mediators under study through these associations and the American Bar Association.
  •  Undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science in 1965 from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

  • Bachelor of Laws [LLB] in 1968 from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, Texas.

  • Work background began in 1968 as a Research Associate for the United States District Court in the Eastern District of Texas [Hon. Wm. Wayne Justice presiding], and then in private civil litigation practice in Texas until moving to California in 1972. In California, Mr. Smith established a sales agency business in the health care products field while completing the Bar Exam. He has been in private legal practice in California since 1973 engaging in the fields of practice described above.

  • Mr. Smith served as a Business Law Professor at Diablo Valley College from 1986 to 1990, and personally conducted seminars in leadership training and personal development from 1976 to 1986.

  • Affiliations past and present include memberships or activities in: American & California Bar Associations [and various sections]; Contra Costa County Bar Association, including various sections – ADR, Litigation, Real Estate, Corporate & Commercial Sections; Northern California Mediation Association; Alameda-Contra Costa Trial Lawyers Association; American Trial Lawyers Association; California Association of Consumer Attorneys; Mt. Diablo Estate Planning Council; Rules of Court Committee of State Bar; Executives Association Of Contra Costa County - Board & President; Organized and operated Law Explorer Post 300 through the Mt. Diablo Council of the Boy Scouts of America; Jaycees-Walnut Creek, California and US [including lifetime membership as a JCI Senator]; Lions Club, Lafayette; Contra Costa Country Club - Board 1995-98, plus ongoing committee work.
