About the WMF
WHAT IS THE WORLD MEDIATION FORUM?
The WMF is a global association of people, organizations and institutions interested in interpersonal, intergroup, community, transcultural and international mediation. It is committed to the use of mediation and other appropriate collaborative conflict management processes wherever conflicts threaten the well being of individuals, organizations, communities, and local, state or national governments. The WMF is committed to the exchange of information related to mediation on its website and at a congress to be convened bi-annually.
The WMF was created in Dublin, Ireland in 1993 as the result of the First International Conference on Mediation and it was formally constituted at the Assembly celebrated at the First WMF Congress at El Escorial, Spain in 1995. Subsequent congresses were convened in Havana, Cuba in 1998 and Sardinia, Italy in 2000. The last congress was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in May 2003 and was attended by 740 delegates from 43 countries.
WHAT IS ITS GOAL?
To exchange and develop knowledges related to mediation. A conference will be organised every two years.
HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER
Send in an application form, which can be downloaded from our website, (personal and/or institutional) for acceptance by the Steering Commitee.
HOW TO FOUND A DELEGATION
The Forum´s idea is to bring everyone interested in mediation together. As there are many different ways to understand mediation, as well as many fields of practice, it is suggested that you meet with others in your area or locality who have similar interests to you and form a Delegation of at least 15 people.
The WMF Steering Commitee will be available to support your Delegation and to make suggestions.
The material you produce will be documented and shared with other members from all over the world on our website and at the WMF bi-annual conferences.
If this proposal does not get your interest, please join the association individually and you will get the same advantages.
ADVANTAGES OF BEING A WORLD MEDIATION FORUM MEMBER
1.You will be able to get discount in each organized event, including the WMF biannual conference.
2.You will be able to connect with a world mediators' network, which will be useful in your professional practice or in your research area.
3.As a founder or member of a delegation, you will be able to cooperate with those who understand and practice mediation on similar terms as you.
4.As the Forum intends to put people/institutions practicing many kinds of mediation together, you will be able to widen your own understanding of mediation through sharing the experiences of others who are in a different field.
5.You will have direct communication as an individual, or through your Delegation President, with the WMF Steering Commitee to express your concerns and suggestions about matters concerning the WMF and to ensure that the WMF satisfies its member needs and expectations.
6.You can contribute, read and make comments on the publications and other information on the WMF website.
7.The WMF's official languages are English, French and Spanish, thus avoiding any language barrier or language monopoly, and making the Forum a real International Organisation. If technology allows, we will try to increase the number of official languages.
