Training Objectives
What does this workshop include?
This is a very interactive workshop. We guarantee you will have fun, in spite of the seriousness of conflict and divorce. We will use activities, group discussions, role-plays, demonstrations, videos, stories, and lectures to help you gain a deeper understanding of conflict and the skills you can use to help people in conflict. You will learn what you can do to provide a mediation where people can better understand themselves, their situation and each other, so they can decide what they will do next.
This workshop is intended for both new and experienced mediators as well as for family law attorneys and other family professionals. We have designed the time to help you:
- Increase your understanding of the dynamics of conflict
- Recognize your own assumptions about conflict and how they may impact your effectiveness.
- Understand the different mediation models and their underlying principles
- Discover the principles you want to guide you as a mediator – and learn the tools you’ll need.
- Learn reframing and other skills that help people communicate without attacking each other
- Deal with conflict and power imbalances
- Deal with strong emotions and the psychological issues of divorce
- Recognize and deal with gender, racial, ethnic, cultural, and other differences and their effects on the parties
- Understand the difference between the roles of mediator, therapist, and attorney
- Achieve impartiality and confidentiality and uphold mediator ethics and standards
We will cover the practical aspects of starting your own mediation practice so you can:
- Handle the initial telephone call effectively
- Screen for appropriateness, including determining the presence of power imbalances and/or domestic violence
- Address the Mediation Agreement and the Fee Agreement
- Deal with the financial and legal issues in a case
- Help parties create a parenting plan
- Work with attorneys and other professionals
- Write effective agreements
