"Responding to conflicts productively means utilizing the opportunities they present to change and transform the parties as human beings. It means encouraging and helping the parties to use the conflict to realize and actualize their inherent capacities both for strength of self and for relating to others."

— Bush & Folger, The Promise of Mediation

This training is appropriate for beginners to mediation and those who have had previous training in the interest-based approach to mediation. At the heart of Transformative Mediation as best described by Bush and Folger in The Promise of Mediation is the belief that the parties are the decision-makers both as to the content and the process of the mediation. The training emphasizes the non-directive facilitation skills of the mediator to support opportunities that arise in the mediation for both empowerment and recognition by the parties.

The hallmark of this training is skill supervision in small groups. In many mediation trainings, participants role-play with no supervision by a trainer; in this training participants are coached in their communication techniques with immediate feedback from a highly skilled professional mediator. Role-plays include disputes ranging from family, business, workplace, litigation, and those drawn from participant's own experience.

MCLE Credit: The Conflict Management Institute certifies that Transformative Mediation Training has been approved for MCLE credit by the State Bar of California in the amount of 26 hours, of which 1 hour will apply to legal ethics. CEU's for MFCC's and LCSW's: Antioch University of Southern California, a provider of continuing education for therapists accredited by the Board of Behavioral Sciences, will grant 30 hours of CE units to therapists who complete Transformative Mediation Training.
