SUGGESTED MEDIATION GUIDELINES
- Only one person speaks at a time.
- When other party speaks you listen with complete attention in order to understand that party.
- Try to persuade the other party not to intimidate them.
- Try to be honest about your role in the dispute and about your feelings.
- Describe other party’s actions without imputing bad intentions.
- Look for points of agreement.
- Look to the future not to the past.
- View your own assumptions critically.
- Don’t let your anger divert you from reaching the goals you need.
- Try to agree on issues that don’t significantly harm your interests.
- Try to approach the dispute as a joint problem to be resolved in a cooperative and creative manner.
- Consider the mediator as an ally.
