What is Mediation? > Mediation Guidelines

SUGGESTED MEDIATION GUIDELINES

  1. Only one person speaks at a time.

  2. When other party speaks you listen with complete attention in order to understand that party.

  3. Try to persuade the other party not to intimidate them.

  4. Try to be honest about your role in the dispute and about your feelings.

  5. Describe other party’s actions without imputing bad intentions.

  6. Look for points of agreement.

  7. Look to the future not to the past.

  8. View your own assumptions critically.

  9. Don’t let your anger divert you from reaching the goals you need.

  10. Try to agree on issues that don’t significantly harm your interests.

  11. Try to approach the dispute as a joint problem to be resolved in a cooperative and creative manner.

  12. Consider the mediator as an ally.

“If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape a hundred days of sorrow.”
