ELDER MEDIATION INTEREST GROUP (EMIG)
The Elder Mediation Interest Group's (EMIG) mission is to promote, strengthen, and advocate for quality dispute resolution for elders and those who care for and about them. EMIG raises awareness of how mediation can help elders have more control over the important decisions that affect their lives by improving communication with and among family members and service providers. We want EMIG to be recognized as the voice for elder mediation education and advocacy in Oregon.
Elder mediation is a term that has emerged in the last decade as a specialized type of mediation for disputes involving elders. Elder mediation brings elders (whenever possible), family members, and professionals together to address the major life changes inherent in the aging process.
The goal is to help families and caregivers communicate about situations they feel need to be addressed while giving elders more of a voice in decisions that affect their lives. Issues appropriate for mediation include: care-giving, housing and living arrangements, financial management, guardianship matters, estate and probate matters, healthcare planning/medical care, and end-of-life decisions.
Membership in EMIG is open to any interested person. Everyone is welcome to attend an EMIG event or activity, regardless of whether or not they are OMA members.
EMIG members may use the EMIG list serve to inform themselves about elder mediation, share experiences, and learn about upcoming events. To learn more about EMIG, contact any member of the Steering Committee.
We invite you to learn more about elder mediation and join us in our mission to promote, strengthen, and advocate for quality dispute resolution for elders and those who care for and about them.
