Networking is a process where the goal is to give and get referals (which are more than leads). So, establishing a network is critical to a mediators success. However, it is important to note that not all networks are equal. We can spend a lot of time in a network without getting a single referal. Don't take it personally people may find themselves reticent to refer people they know who are in conflict or they may avoid discussing conflict in their business relationships.

So, what kind of netowrk works - well - obviously a network of attorneys works - but that's hard to create if you're a non lawyer - like attracts like - however, there are exceptions so it's worthwhile exploring.

What else  - well there's our communities and there are opportunities to speak - however, you're competing with other topics. If you can get a apeaking engagement - do it and do it well. So, presnetation skills are important.

Another network is your communicty medation center where you do meet people who can utilize your services and be willing to pay. Good luck with that one but it offers potential. You have to learn to weave in your private practice without conflict with your volunteer activities. One way to do that is to handle cases not related to your primary practice.

Finally there are the people with whom you interact. Former clients, friends, relatives, people you meet in everyday life. It's incredible - but people don't know what it is we do. Giving them a clear idea is critical.
