1. Articles

What's a Conflict?
by Dan Dana
Workplaces are changing. As interpersonal rules of
conduct become looser and time deadlines become
tighter, conflict resolution is gaining importance as a
strategic management issue. 'Conflict Resolution' is
the first book to provide specific mediation skills and
managerial tools for successfully preventing, managing,
and resolving workplace conflicts.
Read the first chapter online.

Confidentiality Issues in Workplace Mediation:
What Every HR Manager Should Know
by John Ford
Increasingly organizations are making use of
mediation to resolve disputes between employees.
Whether mediation is offered by an internal peer
mediator or an external mediator, the extent to
which communications made during the mediation
will be restricted from further dissemination is
always at issue.

The Challenge of Terror: A Traveling Essay
By John Paul Lederach
Though natural, the cry for revenge and the call for
the unleashing of the first war of this century,
prolonged or not, seems more connected to social
and psychological processes of finding a way to
release deep emotional anguish, a sense of powerlessness,
and our collective loss than it does as a plan of action
seeking to redress the injustice, promote change and
prevent it from ever happening again.

Black and Red, White & Blue: What Choices
do We Have to the Attacks on America?
by Paula M. Young
Forgive me if I join the call for a peaceful dialogue
and justice through international criminal law. As
a mediator and trial attorney, I have faith in the
integrity and success of both processes. Forgive
me if I chose to wear black in respect for the missing
and dead, but chose not to wear a flag in support of
a call to war. Forgive me if I ask for the courage to
look for a skillful resolution that does not involve violence.

3. Terrorism Conflicts

Following the terrible events of September 11,
those of us working in the peace making and
conflict resolution fields have a responsibility to
contribute our insights to the debate over how
to respond. In order to facilitate an exchange of
ideas on this question, CRInfo has established
this new, special edition devoted to the crisis.

4. Poll Predicts Change in the Workplace
As A Result of Terrorist Attacks

The SHRM/eePulse poll, HR Implications of the
Attack on America, included the responses of 5,673 HR professionals.
When asked what changes they predicted as a
result of the tragedies, 66 percent of human
resource professionals said that employees would
be more caring toward one another. Approximately
half of respondents said organizations would put
higher security provisions in place (56 percent) and
52 percent felt that employees would not consider
travel as glamorous. An additional 37 percent said
that business travel would be curtailed and 35 percent
said workers will be more wary of working in
high-rise buildings. The report is available online at

5. Welcome to the Platinum Rule!

Everyone knows the Golden Rule:
"Do unto others as you would have done unto you."
But this habit can turn off those who have different
needs, wants, and hopes than we do. Instead, the
real key to making a difference is to apply
The Platinum Rule:
"Do unto others as they would like done unto them!"

6. EEOC Chair Urges Workplace Tolerance In Wake Of Terrorist Attacks

In the wake of this week's tragic events,
Cari M. Dominguez, Chair of the U.S. EEOC
called on all employers and employees across
the country to promote tolerance and guard against
unlawful workplace discrimination based
on national origin or religion.

"We should not allow our anger at the terrorists
responsible for this week's heinous attacks to
be misdirected against innocent individuals
because of their religion, ethnicity, or country of origin,"
Chair Dominguez said.

"In the midst of this tragedy, employers should
take time to be alert to instances of harassment
or intimidation against Arab-American and Muslim
employees. Preventing and prohibiting injustices
against our fellow workers is one way to fight back,
if only symbolically, against the evil forces that
assaulted our workplaces Tuesday morning."

EEOC encourages all employers to do the following:
* Reiterate policies against harassment based
on religion, ethnicity, and national origin;
* Communicate procedures for addressing
workplace discrimination and harassment;
* Urge employees to report any such improper conduct; and
* Provide training and counseling, as appropriate.

8. Employee Assistance Programs Serve as
First Line of Defense In Aftermath of
Workplace Tragedies

One day after hijacked airplanes slammed into
the World Trade Center towers in New York and
the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C., workers
in those cities and elsewhere in the United States
returned to their jobs, fulfilling President Bush's
declaration Tuesday night that the American economy
and government would be "open for business tomorrow."
But many employers and employees, even those
not directly affected by the tragedies, are finding it
difficult to resume business as usual after witnessing
such horrific events.

9.  Quotes

"One of our strongest weapons is dialogue."
Nelson Mandela

". . .the first thing I would do is listen. I would try
to understand why he had acted in that cruel way.
I would try to understand all of the suffering that
had led him to violence. It might not be easy to listen
in that way, so I would have to remain calm and
lucid. I would need several friends with me, who
are strong in the practice of deep listening, listening
without reacting, without judging and blaming. In
this way, an atmosphere of support would be
created for this person and those connected so
that they could share completely, trust that they
are really being heard."
Thich Nhat Hanh

"If you knew the secret history
Of those you would like to punish
You would find a sorrow and suffering
Enough to disarm all your hostility."
Longfellow

"An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind."
Gandhi
