Few of us have the luxury of either taking six months from a paid job or of spending tens of thousands of dollars to establish even a part time professional practice. Thus, we go back to work as assistants, etc. and volunteer whenever we can.We don't attend all the conferences because they are, quite frankly, expensive! HOWEVER-it must be noted that ALL of our interactions are enriched by our mediation training and by consciously employing this training on a daily basis, we are continually refining these skills and enriching our environments. I might add that in the county of Los Angeles at least, attorneys are finding this a great complement to their practice-a cost-effective complement. The WORKING ranks of paid professional mediators in LA County is weighted on the side of attorneys and retired judges. Even so, I STILL champion this process, and whether one ends up being a paid professional or volunteer mediator, I believe CR should be a required Social Studies course in every school. As Avis Ridley Thomas said, her "goal is to have a mediator on every block." Best Regards, Suzan

I have a MPA with certificate in mediation from the University of Akron, OH. I've dabbled in mediation for 5 years or so. I've found most of this article to be very much applicable. The 'system resistance' -- when desiring to create restorative justice programming (youths particularly) is quite strong. Those who benefit from crime, violence (conflict)being (courts, attornies, justice systems)often times oppose mediation. Crime is big business. Restorative measures have been found to help youths, families, VICTIMS, and community. Push for restorative measure for youths and adults alike. This is a valuable component to mediation, oft times ignored or opposed by systems. Thank you for the article. Geri

I recently had a chance to read the MEDIATION CAREER GUIDE by Forest Mosten. His book is a very practical guide for mediators who are considering making mediation their day job . I was very impressed by his step by step analysis of how to succeed in the mediation business. Woody is a respected author and mediator and the founder of Mosten Mediation Centers. His book, MEDIATION CAREER GUIDE: A Strategic Approach to Building a Successful Practice is a wonderful resource for those who are interested in learning more about the practical aspects of becoming a mediator. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering a full-time career as a mediator. Troy Morgan Careers Section Editor
