 the true goals of mediation
--

I loved this article by Vezzulla, writing in Spanish, and wish English-speaking readers could hear this mediator's views. Essentially, that "the true goal of mediation [is] to help the citizenry obtain freedom which implies the ability to confront and resolve people's own personal and community conflicts through participation, responsibility, cooperation and respect". As I am new to this field, I am delighted to see, from Vezzulla's article, that practitioners in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America are connecting their work and their training to a vision of helping ordinary working people create a radically better world based on freedom and respect for all. I especially am grateful for Vezzulla's recommendations for going into the communities we mediators want to help, with the understanding that we are going in to listen and observe, NOT to evaluate or diagnose, but instead help the people themselves do their own evaluation of what is happening to them and who they are and where they want to go. I feel more inspired now to do the work in some of Chicago's "minority" communities where I have transit. John Cabral
