The relationship of the parties needs to have the chance to be repaired enough for them to agree to work together before they can be empowered to work as a team against the cause of the conflict. Their interpersonal conflict then would be resolved.

I agree, this is a valuable approach in a significant number of conflicts, and using the picture of apples and barrels makes the point very clear. I will add this picture to my repertoire, thank you.
