This is so very true in mediations where the parties come in thinking they are too far apart to settle, but sometimes after they hear the other side or can talk openly they realize they actually agree on some issues. Also, I like the comment about knowing the other party is ready to "get real" because people often don't schedule out enough time for mediation. People often do not realize negotiations could take hours.
