The need to change expectations is so important isn't it? We should not portray dispute resolution processes as being a way to avoid conflict in the resolution of a dispute, but rather as a way of enabling that conflict to be expressed in a way that is managed, safe and contained. It struck me also that there is an interesting parallel in the married couple who might throw in the towel when conflict arises in the relationship and the couple who throw in the towel when conflict then arises in the mediation. Do we, as society, lack conflict competence or do we suffer from an expectation that conflict is bad and marks the end of things? Regards Neil
