STUDENTS BECOME FACULTY

On July 22, 2004, a father and son teamed up in Cleveland, Texas to teach their first continuing legal education seminar.  Their topic was mediation and the classroom was filled with local attorneys and mediators.

John Duncum of Bryan, Texas and his son, Mike, of Conroe, Texas have partnered in a number of ventures before.  This one was new to both.

Mike and John lack only one course completing their certificates in conflict resolution from Abilene Christian University.  Both men were drawn to the study of dispute resolution as a result of their life experiences.

"I have seen how mediation works in the real world and I wanted to be part of it," John stated.  A well-known businessman in the Bryan-College Station area, John has worn many hats.  From real estate development to automobile dealerships to the bed-and-breakfast he and his wife, Diane, operate, John stays involved.

Mike, who has worked in several businesses with his father, concentrates his time on real estate appraisal.  Both Mike and John are often employed as expert witnesses in lawsuits.

The seminar was hosted by the Lone Star Dispute Resolution Center in Cleveland and is the first of several slated that will feature the Duncums.

SCHEDULE CHANGES STRENGTHEN CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Abilene Christian University's Center for Conflict Resolution announced today that a number of course scheduling principles have been adopted that will strengthen its graduate certificate program in conflict resolution.

"The purpose of setting these principles is to enable students to make better decisions about class schedules," said Joey Cope, executive director of the Center.  "In the past, the certificate program schedule was driven more by pent-up demand for courses.  Now, with a larger student population and with faculty who are able to commit to regular teaching assignments, we are able to meet expectations in a number of ways."

A major goal is to offer a majority of the classes in both the Abilene and Dallas markets at least once a year.  The required courses, Negotiation, Mediation and Advanced Conflict Management will be offered each fall semester in Abilene and then again in Dallas in the spring semester.  Two elective courses, Conflict in the Workplace and Family Mediation, will be offered in Dallas in the fall semester and in Abilene in the spring.

Because of the large number of teachers desiring to take Managing Conflict in Schools, it will continue being offered during the summer in Abilene.  Managing Conflict in Churches, a popular course for ministry students and church leaders in addition to certificate students, will be offered each spring semester in Dallas.

All courses will continue to be offered in the weekend intensive format.  The schedule for courses for Summer II 2004 and Fall 2004 is available on the "Calendar" page.

DR. ROBERT J. STRADER ADDED TO CONFLICT RESOLUTION STAFF

Robert J. "Jerry" Strader, D.D.S., assumed his new role as Mediator In Residence for the Center for Conflict Resolution at Abilene Christian University today.  Strader, who recently retired from his position as Senior Vice President of Hendrick Health Systems of Abilene, is fulfilling a long-time dream to work full-time in the field of dispute resolution.

An alumnus of ACU and a member of the senior board of the university, Strader has dedicated his life to learning.  In addition to his undergraduate degree in business and his graduate degrees in dentistry, Strader completed his master's degree in dispute resolution from the Pepperdine University School of Law in 2003 at the age of 73.

Strader will be working closely with the Center's executive director, Joey Cope.  Strader will assume direct responsibility for the Alternatives in Mediation Program -- an on-campus mediation service for ACU students.  In addition, he will be active in training seminars, mediations, and promotion of the Center.

Dr. Strader, a licensed oral surgeon, is a retired brigadier general from the U.S. Army.  He is actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America and the Highland Church of Christ in Abilene, where he serves as an elder.
