Course Offerings

Abilene Christian University has drawn from its existing course offerings and designed new courses to address the breadth of issues presented in conflict resolution. Required Courses (3 courses):

  • ADVANCED CONFLICT MANAGEMENT (COMS 630)
    Designed to prepare professionals for the field of conflict mediation.  Provides advanced opportunities to analyze case studies, critique basic assumptions of conflict theories and role-play appropriate behavior in conflict scenarios.
  • NEGOTIATION: PRINCIPLE AND PRACTICE (PSYC 605)
    Comprehensive study of the conceptual and interpersonal skills required to engage in effective negotiation.  Topics include analyzing the negotiation context, preparing a negotiation plan, conducting negotiation sessions, resolving impasses, and documenting agreements.  Emphasis on development of analytical and interpersonal negotiation skills.  
  • MEDIATION: PRINCIPLE AND PRACTICE (PSYC 606)
    Comprehensive study of the conceptual and interpersonal skills required to serve as a mediator.  Topics include analyzing background information, preparing a mediation plan, conducting mediation sessions and caucuses, resolving impasses, and documenting agreements.  Emphasis on strategic approach to assisting parties by creating opportunity for agreement.  (Prerequisite: COMS 630: Advanced Conflict Management or PSYC 605: Negotiation)

Electives (2 courses selected by the student):

  • MANAGING CONFLICT IN CHURCHES (BIBM 645)
    Offers an examination of the causes, arenas, and dynamics of conflict in churches with an introduction to five major approaches to intervening in conflicted situations.  A variety of instructional methods, including lectures, case studies, role plays, media, expert resource persons, and personal style instruments will be employed.
  • MANAGING CONFLICT IN SCHOOLS (EDUC 634)
    Provides a basic understanding of the nature and management of conflict in schools.  Students will learn to identify and deal with conflict through appropriate strategies, processes and interpersonal skills.
  • CONFLICT IN THE WORKPLACE (PSYC 607)
    Designed to prepare professionals for conflict mediation.  Provides opportunities to develop skills in identifying the signs and root causes of friction, anger, violence and conflict in the work environment.  Analysis of case studies provides the framework for understanding organizational alternative dispute resolution systems.  (Prerequisite: COMS 630: Advanced Conflict Management)
  • CONFLICT PRACTICUM (COMS 600)
    (independent study)
  • ADVANCED MEDIATION: FAMILY ISSUES (NON-DIVORCE) (PSYC 640)
    *This course is not designed to meet the training requirements for Texas
    court-appointed mediators.
    (Prerequisite: PSYC 606: Mediation)
  • ADVANCED MEDIATION: MARITAL DISPUTES (PSYC 609)               (formerly called Family Mediation)                                              (Prerequisite: PSYC 606: Mediation)
