Cope Elected TMTR Co-Convener

Joe L. Cope, Executive Director of ACU’s Center for Conflict Resolution, was elected co-convener of the Texas Mediation Trainers Roundtable (TMTR) at the organization’s November meeting in Austin, Texas.  Cope will work alongside co-convener Laura Otey to organize and conduct monthly TMTR meetings in 2009.  Laura and her husband, Robert, are noted trainers and mediators.  Robert teaches “Managing Conflict in Schools” in ACU’s masters program in conflict resolution and reconciliation.  Both Laura and Robert direct the education track each June in the program’s summer Residency Session.

The mission of TMTR is to “establish and communicate standards and best practices for mediation training and trainers to promote the highest degree of professionalism, integrity, creativity, and quality of mediation in Texas.”  Since 1992, TMTR’s goal has been to create standards for mediation training and trainers.  Among the notable accomplishments of the organization is the development of the Basic Mediation Training Standards in 1994, a first of such training standards in the nation.  The Texas Supreme Court, the Texas Association of Mediators, and the Texas Mediator Credentialing Association have endorsed the TMTR standards.  TMTR members benefit from a variety of support services including resources, networking and training.
