ACU's Center for Conflict Resolution Awarded $13,000 Grant
"We are grateful to the United Way for its generous contribution to this project," said Dr. Joe Cope, executive director of the Center for Conflict Resolution. "We believe this project will provide essential tools to the greater Abilene community to promote relationships and ease the tension of conflict. Our relationship with FaithWorks will enable us to further identify and develop the training elements that are most effective and use those elements in future trainings." FaithWorks is a non-profit organization that addresses the issues of poverty and crime by providing career training, life skills and spiritual nurturing to unemployed Abilene residents wanting a fresh start. Last spring, the Center for Conflict Resolution was awarded $5,000 by the Community Foundation of Abilene for the same educational community project. Lori Anne Shaw, assistant director for program development, sought out and researched both of the grants for the CCR's program. The two grants should fully fund the educational training project, said Shaw. In January, the center will begin training and supporting 10 local nonprofit agencies, free-of-charge. After the training, organizations will equip adults in poverty or low-income situations with conflict resolution skills. "Conflict exists throughout our society," said Cope. "Specific training in conflict resolution has targeted only a very small part of our population. Our partnership with FaithWorks of Abilene, made possible through this grant, is part of a project with numerous Abilene non-profit organizations." The Center for Conflict Resolution provides outreach services to individuals, businesses, schools, government agencies, non-profit organizations and churches. Those services include training in conflict management, prevention, resolution, reconciliation, and direct conflict intervention and mediation. The center is located 1541 N. Judge Ely Blvd. across from the main ACU campus. For more information about the Center for Conflict Resolution and its services, visit their website or contact the center at 325-674-2427.
