Student Spotlight: Betsy Freeman
In fall 2006 Freeman saw the need for a peer mediation program at the high school as well as conflict resolution curriculum for the behavioral adjustment class. She collaborated with her husband (who is a principal, coach, and also a recent graduate of ACU’s M.A. in Education program) to write a grant to the STAR Foundation, a grant program through Abilene Independent School District. The grant received funding and Freeman implemented the peer mediation program training students from the behavioral adjustment class and student council to be peer mediators. Pleased at the enthusiasm of the peer mediators, Freeman looks forward to training more peer mediators this year as she continues to educate the school about the new program. Additionally, Freeman used the conflict resolution curriculum in the behavioral adjustment class as social skills training. As a result, she has noticed a significant increase in students’ self-esteem and a decrease in their participation in fights on campus. Not only does Freeman have a passion for peacemaking in schools, but she is also interested in divorce family mediation as she is listed as a non-attorney mediator for the local family court.
