Graduate Certificate Program in Conflict Resolution

Abilene Christian University began offering the graduate certificate program in conflict mediation in 1999. Building on a wealth of academic preparation and field experience, the professors for these courses are drawn from the ACU campus and all across the nation. The program was retitled the graduate certificate program in conflict resolution in the fall semester 2003.

Certificate students are required to complete five graduate courses offered in a non-traditional weekend format in Abilene, Dallas, and other selected cities. Each of the three-hour courses is completed by attending two weekend sessions. The weekend format has proven attractive to both business professionals and graduate students working with high demands on their time and availability.

Participants in the certificate program earn 15 hours of graduate credit and receive a formal Graduate Certificate in Conflict Resolution upon completion of course work.

The earned credit may also be applied toward graduate programs at ACU in communication, psychology, religion, and organizational & human resource development.

A Unique Program

Alternative dispute resolution is a rapidly growing field. Education in conflict resolution is available in a number of formats. Many programs offer 25 to 40 hours of training -- the bare minimum in those states where standards are set.

Through its certificate program, ACU offers 200 classroom hours of instruction and the opportunity for practical experience. With exposure to both theory and skill development exercises, the students complete the program with multiple perspectives on conflict and a creative foundation for problem-solving. This depth of preparation is invaluable to those who are seeking a career in dispute resolution or who find themselves with significant peacemaking opportunities in their chosen career.

An added value of ACU's graduate certificate program in conflict resolution is its  Christian world-view. This faith-based approach is an essential factor in true peacemaking.
