In mediation, disputing people reach mutually voluntary agreements in privacy and confidentiality. They take an active role and have greater control than when a stranger -- a judge -- makes decisions for them. The great majority of people who think they can never agree on anything (usually because they've lost trust in each other) end up surprised and delighted that they, in fact, reached an agreement.
