John Haynes Distinguished Mediator Award Presented to Peter Salem

Marilyn McKnight, ACR President, and Peter Salem, Award Recipient Peter Salem has been awarded the John Haynes Distinguished Mediator Award by the Association for Conflict Resolution. The award is presented annually to a prominent and internationally recognized leader in mediation who demonstrates personal and professional commitment to finding mediation solutions to conflict while balancing therapeutic and legal perspectives.

Salem is executive director of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) and served as an adjunct professor of law at Marquette University Law School where he taught mediation for ten years. He formerly served as director and mediator for Rock County, WI Mediation and Family Court Services. He is a former president of the Wisconsin Association of Mediators, co-editor (with Jay Folberg and Ann Milne) of Divorce Mediation: Models Techniques and Applications, and author of numerous journal articles about mediation, domestic violence, parent education and family law. He also has written and produced several videotapes

Salem’s recent work has revolved around spearheading organizational collaborations to create reform in family law and dispute resolution processes and systems to benefit children and families. Specifically, he spearheaded (with Billie Lee Dunford-Jackson), a North American collaboration between family court professionals, researchers and domestic violence professionals. He co-chaired the Family Law Education Reform Project (with Andrew Schepard), a national project promoting the incorporation of ADR and skills building into the family law curriculum. He also directed a project implementing triage systems in Connecticut’s family courts (project recognized as a finalist in Kennedy School’s Innovations in American Government Awards). Salem also chaired Wisconsin Association of Mediators Emerging Issues in Mediation Conference (1992-2002) a top regional mediation conference.

John Haynes, for whom the award is named, was a pioneer in the field of family mediation, a respected author and practitioner, an international trainer, and the first president of the Academy of Family Mediators.

Biography




Peter Salem is executive director of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) and teaches mediation at Marquette University Law School. He formerly served as director and mediator of Mediation and Family Court Services in Rock County. Salem is a former president of the Wisconsin Association of Mediators, former director of Rock County Mediation and Family Court Services, and is co-editor (with Jay Folberg and Ann Milne) of the new book, "Divorce Mediation: Models Techniques and Applications," Guildford Publications, 2004.

He has provided mediation, training and consulting services since 1986 and has provided training and technical assistance to family court service agencies throughout the United States. He has written numerous articles, and written and produced several educational and training videotapes on mediation and divorce.
