I am pleased to announce that the book of the month for Kristina’s Mediation Book Club is
The Power Of A Positive No (How To Say NO And Still Get To Yes)by William Ury (the coauthor of the NY Times bestseller Getting to Yes).
I just received the book and have zipped through the first couple of chapters and I can say this one will help you in your marketing and business development, it will definitely help you at the mediation table in your dealings with the parties and in your coaching of the parties and it will help you in all aspects of your personal life.
I have already been empowered by the approach and I’m sure you will be too. As mediators we are about party empowerment. We aim to empower parties to negotiate better, to explore additional options and to collaborate with those they find themselves in conflict with and to make the best choice given their situation. The power of a positive NO, is a key to getting to Yes.
Ury’s three step approach of 1) your Yes (what you say yes to based on your values, it is your intention for the situation), 2) the positive NO (given your yes, what you are saying no to) and then, 3) getting to yes (through negotiation or agreement with the other side). The formula is presented in a simple, understandable manner, yet the approach is profound and life giving.
It is when we live in harmony with our values and our intentions that we can truly live at peace with ourselves and others. Sometimes a positive no is a critical part of authentic living.
The book is filled with Ury’s personal examples and examples from many others. Get your copy today by clicking here. I will write more nuggets from the book as I finish reading it.
