The Modern Way to Manage your Caseload

by Clare Fowler
June 2012 Clare Fowler

Everywhere you look, people are asking you to do more with less. Get more done in less time. Drive farther with less gas. Help more people with less money.

Manage more cases, more staff, more contacts, and more documents with less time, less money, and less help.

So how do you do it? To get more done in less time, you learn how to be organized, streamline what you need to focus on, and filter out what will distract you. To drive farther with less gas, you use technology. To help more people with less money you find the most effective program for your money.

Now you can use those same tools to manage your cases. Finding a program that is organized, streamlined, filtering, technologically-advanced, and a good investment for your time and money may sound daunting.

Five years ago it was impossible.

What has happened in the last five years that has brought this technology to your fingertips?

First, the technology exists to write the software that you need. This isn't just case managing software--that has been around for decades. The software available now lets you design your own program. You choose your own fields, how big, how small, what templates you want, and then integrate everything into one organized, simple package.

Second, mediators are sharing information more than ever. They are talking about how they are managing their cases, what they need, what works in courts, community programs, large ADR panels, and private firms. They also have social platforms now to be very vocal about what doesn't work.

Third, we discovered the cloud. Information can now be stored online, instantaneously, in the Amazon cloud, in a secure, encrypted space. This means that you can have instant updates on your staff, your cases, and your clients. You can know who settled, which client uploaded a document, who scheduled another mediation, and what office is ready to be billed. You can also determine who is given access to your case cloud. Can your mediators edit cases? Can they update their client's information? Can your intern make notes, but not see your confidential notes? You decide--it's your cloud.

With the streamlined, effective technology, you are now able to manage more (cases, staff, referral sources, secure documents, volunteers, email templates, intake forms, settlement agreements) with less (less time to set-up, less money than other programs, and less work).
