We regret to announce the passing of the Mediation Program that has been funded by the City of Kansas City since 1980. Over the years this program has conducted between 500-800 mediations and facilitated dialogues annually for landlord-tenant disputes, neighborhood conflicts, domestic relations disputes, crimes against persons and property, student and school conflicts, business-consumer disputes, cultural differences, noise and parking disputes. The mediaton program was operated through the Human Relations Division, part of the City Manager's Office. The program, with four full-time employees and many volunteer mediators, was eliminated by a budget cut for the fiscal year commencing May 1, 2009. Person interested in mediation services may direct questions to Katherine Wade at 816.513.1831. The Community Mediation Center is attempting to handle referrals as a stop gap measure. Contact CMC at 816.461.TALK THe AIM for Peace project started in 2008 to counter gang-related community violence also funded in part by Kansas City has received a six month reprieve while the budget cut for this program is being reviewed.
