Boost Your Energy at Work!
Lately, I find myself really tired at the end of my work day. My role at work has changed a lot in the last year and my workload is sometimes overwhelming, but I didn’t think it would zap me this much. I don’t care much for my new supervisor, and I don’t like some of the recent changes in the company, so I know I’m not as positive about working here as I used to be. At my recent annual physical, I discussed this with my doctor and was given a clean bill of health. Any other ideas to help me stop going home from work exhausted? More...
PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR NEEDS DEFINING
I joined this firm as a senior manager last year. From the beginning, I’ve been appalled by the unprofessional behavior of some employees. I’ve heard foul jokes in the break room, swearing in the hallways, snide remarks at meetings, and yelling over the telephone. I have made it clear at staff meetings that I expect everyone to behave professionally, but the bad behavior continues. Some say this is the way it’s always been so there’s no point in trying to change it. Is it too much to expect that everyone behave professionally at work? More...
Coaching Can Improve Work Performance
I was recently passed over for a promotion to a management position and the primary reason given is that I need to improve my leadership skills. My boss says she will support a promotion for me in the future if I can demonstrate greatly improved performance in this area. I met with someone from human resources to figure out how I can fill this gap and was told that I should consider working with a coach. I know what a coach does in football, but what’s the role of a coach in the workplace? More...
Good Listening Takes Skill-building and Effort
I recently had my first yearly performance evaluation after being promoted to floor supervisor. My boss gave me a lot of good feedback but I scored really low in how well I listen. I really like this job and was hoping to continue to move up the ladder, so how can I become a better listener?
It could be said that most workers receive half of their paycheck for listening but many can’t say they are good listeners. In fact, poor listening can be cited as the cause for many problems and costly mistakes in the workplace. While we hear with our ears, listening requires far more than our auditory systems to be in working order. Try these tips to improve your ability to listen effectively. More...
Address Individual Performance Problems with Individuals
There are 18 people in my department, most of whom are self-motivated needing little supervision. Unfortunately, there are a few bad apples that may spoil the whole bunch. Two workers are somewhat careless (most mistakes are caused by them) and a couple others often only do what they need to get by so others need to pick up the slack. We have weekly department meetings where I continually address the need for accuracy and teamwork but there’s no improvement. In fact, some of my good workers have started to grumble and it seems like they’re starting to get bad attitudes too. What can I do before they all become bad apples? More...
Pruning the Office Grapevine
The grapevine in my workplace is really a problem. It’s filled with gossip, rumors, and half-truths and I know some people have left because they didn’t feel they could recover from the damage it caused them. While I’ve never been its victim, I feel bad for others who have and know that it’s making it difficult for some people to work together. Is there anything I can do? More...
