The holiday season has traditionally been a festive time in our workplace. As usual, decorations were hung right after Thanksgiving and we started playing seasonal music. The complaining started when people were asked to sign up to bring treats and gift collections were being organized. I can appreciate concerns about finances but the grumbling has been mostly that there’s just too much merry-making going on. I have supported holiday celebrations as a way to bring fun, festivity, and caring into the work environment and all this griping has me confused. Should I just pull the plug on holiday activities?
All work and no play makes for a dull, unfriendly workplace. A little fun and good cheer go a long way toward making work enjoyable. However, expectations to wholeheartedly embrace the holiday spirit, especially during difficult times, may be creating more stress than cheerfulness. Ease the pressure and make this holiday season enjoyable for everyone with these tips.
Be open-minded. There are many different ways to celebrate the holiday season and maybe it’s time for a change. Try hearing the complaints as helpful feedback and ask for constructive input about what is preferred instead.
Be realistic about expectations. While some may get energized by all of the celebrating, others may find it overwhelming in addition to their other responsibilities and commitments. Most people are worried about the current economic situation, so just because they’re not complaining about finances doesn’t mean it’s not a concern – they may simply not want to be looked at as a Scrooge. Give people a choice, and a way to opt out of activities without judgment, so they can care of themselves and save face.
Be careful that celebrating doesn’t prevent productivity. A “festive” atmosphere creates distractions, both physical and emotional, that can get in the way of getting the job done. While some people’s work load may lighten during the holiday season, for others it can be a peak time because of seasonal demands or year-end requirements. Make sure that the music isn’t blaring and that the festivities are confined to places and times that are appropriate for everyone.
Use this experience to plan for the future. Continue to ask for honest feedback about holiday activities and get everyone involved in deciding how to make the workplace enjoyable.
A truly caring work environment honors and respects the needs of all.
Peace and joy to all from the entire staff of Alternative Resolutions!
