Session 1B: “What Would Gandhi Do? A Lesson in Applied Spirituality”

India's great leader, Mohandas Gandhi, successfully fought against discrimination and political oppression on two continents, with an unwavering commitment to nonviolence. Gandhi believed that the greatest power on earth was the power of love and truth. The legacy of Gandhi's extraordinary accomplishments inspired other great leaders of our time, including Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, Jr. His life and teachings are as relevant today as ever, especially in the field of conflict resolution. This program will explore how we, as mediators and conflict resolution professionals, can apply Gandhi's teachings. Following his example, how can our life, and our work, be an experiment in love and truth?

Speaker: Eileen Barker is a full-time mediator based in San Rafael, CA, with 25 years experience in psychology, spirituality, law and mediation. Her mediation practice focuses on commercial, employment and family/divorce disputes. She teaches mediation at Boalt Hall School of Law, UC Berkeley and UC Hastings School of Law, San Francisco, and has taught numerous courses on spirituality and mediation. She is co-chair of the Association for Conflict Resolution Spirituality Section.
