Conflict Resolution in Education
Learning it Ÿ Doing it Ÿ Proactive Peacemaking K-12 and Beyond

This program will feature panelists who have extensive experience working with teachers and administrators in the development of conflict resolution programs in different educational environments. The focus will be on K-12 models for students and teachers, adult learning opportunities in conflict resolution, and how ADR may fit with mid-life career changes for educators.
Panelists
Brenda Gaspar, Program Director for Conflict Resolution Panels at the Center for Human Development in Pleasant Hill.
Marvin Schwartz, J.D., a trainer and mediator for 20 years, who serves on mediation panels for the University of California, the Postal Service and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing.
Nancy Hanawi, Co-President of the Center for Social Redesign and Sonoma State University, Professor and former College President.
Jim Patton (moderator), ADR-NC Board member, mediator and educator, who uses ADR to help school districts resolve facilities and construction related conflicts.

9:15: Panelists presentations and overview of topics for breakout sessions
10:15 Break
10:30 Concurrent breakout sessions (choose one):
· Session A with Brenda Gaspar: Brenda will present an historical look at an elementary school project at Verde School. She will also discuss her work with teachers and administrators for special needs students through the Contra Costa Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA).
· Session B with Nancy Hanawi: Nancy will describe the range of opportunities adults have in higher education and community-based offerings to learn the skills, attitudes and knowledge of conflict resolution. She will discuss the value of such learning for both personal and institutional change.
· Session C with Marvin Schwartz: Marvin will discuss the impact of the trainings he has developed for K-12 administrators and teachers. He will role-play to demonstrate a mediation process that will show how trained school personnel can use early intervention to resolve conflicts before they became a burden to the school system.
11:30 Group reconvenes for questions and answers and concluding remarks.
Cost is $40 for ADR-NC members and $50 for non-members. Hardship rates of $25 for ADR-NC members and $35 for non-members are available. Add $10 if paying at the door. Seating is limited.
