Location:    Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley

World-renowned Norwegian peace researcher and mediator Johan Galtung is considered the father of peace studies. He established the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) in 1959, the Journal of Peace Research in 1964, and has since contributed over 100 books and more than 1,000 articles to the emerging field. He has served as consultant to numerous UN agencies, taught at major universities worldwide, and founded TRANSCEND, a global network of experts trained in conflict analysis who do field work in the world’s trouble spots. In 1987 he received the Right Livelihood Award, the “alternative Nobel Peace Prize.”

TRANSCEND is an international network of cooperating individuals who promote peace by peaceful means, development by developmental means and environment by environmental means. Its mission is to bring about a more peaceful world by using action, education/training, dissemination and research to handle conflicts creatively and nonviolently. Articles by Galtung and other members of the network, reports on programs, and some training manuals can be freely downloaded from www.transcend.org
