Restorative Justice Workshop

Facilitated by Dominic Barter from Brazil

Thursday, July 12 - Friday, July 13

Preservation Park, Oakland, CA

Meet and train with Dominic Barter, creator of the Circle practice at the heart of Brazil's Restorative Justice (RJ) process. For the last three years, he has trained thousands of people in this RJ program for the Brazilian Ministries of Justice, Education and Human Rights. A Brit, married to a Brazilian, residing in Rio de Janeiro, Dominic originally developed this restorative justice process for Federal government pilot projects at the request of the United Nations Development Programme. This is a comprehensive model that connects personal and social transformation. It brings together schools, courts, businesses, churches, police, social workers, residents and all those in a community experiencing conflict to develop sustainable agreement and increasing safety on urgent or protracted issues. From its pilot project beginnings, this RJ program is now expanding throughout Brazil, and beyond.

In this workshop, participants will set up their own circles and try this model out live, working through challenging conflicts. Dominic will illustrate the power and multiple applications of the model, using video footage to show the impact of the projects in Brazil, and guide participants in envisioning and acting on the practical steps towards local implementation/implementation in their communities/developing their own practice.

Dominic Barter has studied the interface between societal and personal change, and the role of conflict, since the 1980s. He has taught restorative practices internationally for the last 11 years.

Since 2004 he is consultant and training program director to the UN Development Program and UNESCO for the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education and Special Secretariat for Human Rights' pilot projects in Restorative Justice in Brazil. Dominic coordinates the Restorative Justice Project for the international Center for Nonviolent Communication.
