Alternative Dispute Resolution Career FAQ
Are there any licensing requirements in California?
California currently has no certification requirement for mediators.
What are some of the ways I can make a transition or break into the mediation field?
There are many ways to break into mediation. Start by studying the theory and practice of the field. Then volunteer with a local community mediation center (which includes taking their basic training) or co-mediating with someone who is experienced (after taking their training or another program of training).
What training programs are available?
Check with community mediation programs and private mediation centers to learn about trainings they offer. Many have their own training programs.
County bar association mediator panels and state and federal court mediator panels have their own requirements. In general, the requirements for any of these programs are completion of a 40-hour basic mediation program and some mediation experience.
There are several higher education course/program offerings in Northern California.
