Important Information to Advanced Labor Arbitrators Save the date The Workplace Section/Labor Arbitration and Mediation Committee will present its third annual workshop on September 28, 2005, for advanced labor arbitrators at the ACR's Fifth Annual Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Committee co-chairs, Jeremy Cohen, Gary Hattal and Jay Siegel promise this year's offering will not be a remake of the past workshops but will be a one-day, hands on program on the development and management of a successful labor arbitration practice. This learning opportunity is designed for active labor arbitrators with five or more written decisions who desire to firmly advance their careers. Its central focus is on growth, management and development of the professional practice. Learning will depend on interactive participation in discussion with workshop and guest presenters and problem analysis. Topics will include the challenges of decision-making, advanced award writing, ethical guidelines, and effective methods of growth and business-management of a successful practice.A detailed description of the workshop description appears below. Learn to develop the mindset required to develop and manage a successful professional practice, whether part-time or full time. Examine how to design an effective, ethical marketing plan that creates the proper professional presence among users of arbitration services and their “gatekeepers” including the use of brochures, interviews, professional organizational activity, writing in professional journals and public speaking. Hear how to develop income while developing the practice; setting and collection of fees. Learn how to find where the business opportunities are. Learn how to develop confidence in decision-making and in writing decisions and the practical ways to demonstrate that confidence to the parties. Practical discussion will focus on sharing of information about office management policies, use of technology, record keeping, and development of a professional arbitrator’s library and how to access other resources.
