"Conflict Transformation: The Enneagram, A Catalyst for Insight and Change"

Presented by Louise Phipps Senft

Tuesday, June 12th at 12:30 pm EDT 9:30 am Pacific Time

Overviewing the tenets of conflict transformation practice, Louise shared with participants an innovative way to learn about individual core motivations and what unconsciously drives mediators to respond in the ways that they do in mediation and conflict resolution, and to free themselves from the barriers of their personality types to more fully integrate the gifts of the personality types.

The conversation discussed the ancient wisdom of the Enneagram and how it connects to modern-day practice for mediators, psychologists, consultants, coaches, managers, and anyone fostering transformation with their clients and for themselves. No previous knowledge of the Enneagram is required; follow up work is available for those who may wish to attend the Harvard Negotiation Insight Initiative this summer.

Louise Phipps Senft, J.D., voted "Baltimore's Best" Mediator by Baltimore Magazine 2002 and named one of "Maryland's Top 100 Women" for the year 2004 and 2007 by The Daily Record, founded the Baltimore Mediation Center in 1993, the first mediation firm in Maryland. Ms. Senft, also a law professor, designs and delivers training in conflict resolution and transformation and mediation for professionals, court systems, families, companies, contractors, real estate management firms, hospitals, assisted living facilities, higher education, agencies and civic organizations and boards.

"Let the River Run: Opening to Flow"

presented by Erica Ariel Fox

May 24, 2007, 1p.m. Eastern/10:00 am Pacific

In her famous song, Carly Simon calls her listeners to "let the river run." What does this phrase mean? What is the river? What does it mean for it to run?

In this conversation we will reflect together on this topic – what is the river in you? When do you let it run? What blocks it from running freely? What might become possible if it did? In turn we will talk about traditional, mechanistic mindsets, and generative, or emergent mindsets, that involve opening to "flow". We will talk about the implications for aligning with this quality of "flow", both in our ADR practices and in our lives more generally.

Erica Ariel Fox, J.D., is a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, and is the Founder and Director of the Harvard Negotiation Insight Initiative. She is widely-regarded as a pioneer for her work integrating timeless wisdom traditions and spiritual practices with contemporary negotiation and conflict resolution. She teaches and speaks internationally on topics related to conflict and the human spirit, and is currently completing her first book, "Beyond Yes: Deeper Wisdom and the Art of Negotiation."

The Insight Initiative is best-known for its flagship courses offered in July, the HNII Summer Learning Forum. Special discounts are available for members of the ACR Spirituality Section. “Forgiveness: The Next Frontier of Conflict Resolution”
presented by Eileen Barker

March 27, 2007, 3p.m. Eastern/12:00noon Pacific

One of the most empowering choices parties can make is to forgive those who they perceive to have injured or wronged them, rather than continue to feel victimized. Forgiveness enables parties to let go of the past and move forward in their lives.

By learning more about the process of forgiveness, professionals can offer parties a critically important tool for gaining closure on a dispute. This session will look at why forgiveness is important -- in all types of disputes, be they commercial, workplace, family or other. We will discuss how mediators and conflict resolution professionals can initiate a forgiveness dialogue and guide parties through the steps of a forgiveness process.

Eileen Barker is a full-time mediator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Drawing on rich and diverse experience in commerical litigation, psychology and spirituality, over the past fifteen years, Ms. Barker has mediated hundreds of cases in a wide range of subject matters including business/commercial, employment, workplace, partnership, and family/divorce. In addition to her private practice, Ms. Barker teaches courses on mediation and negotiation at Boalt Hall School of Law, UC Hastings School of Law and Sonoma State University. She is also a past co-chair of the ACR Spirituality Section. More information is available on Ms. Barker’s website:

“NEUTRALITY- WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?”
presented by Marilyn Shannon

February 14, 2007, 3p.m. Eastern/12:00noon Pacific

In his book the True Power of Water Dr. Masaru Emoto, Japanese renowned researcher and author hypothesizes that: “water collects information and the information we give water changes its quality.” Since we are as adults approximately 75% water what might that mean to the mediation process? Keeping that in mind, if everything is energy and if two things have the same frequency and they resonate with each other i.e. the parties in conflict, what happens when a new frequency is brought into the mix and that frequency is love? And when you think about it what keeps you out of your ego and in your heart, in a place of balance where you can see indefinitely where judgments either don’t exist or can at least be noticed and sensitized? Love? And is it possible that the only way to actually get to neutral and stay neutral is with love? Join me for a heartfelt discussion on Valentines Day as we explore what love has to do with it.

Marilyn Shannon is a Superior Court Mediator, Life/Business/Wellness Coach, Trainer, Consultant, Speaker and a Licensed Heart Math Provider. As a coach/mediator, Marilyn combines her skills in order to support one individual or an entire family or organization. She specializes in issues relating to relationship, career, family, workplace, special needs/education, ADD/ADHD, parenting and step parenting and loves working with adults, teens, and children.
